The coastal towns of Brighton across to Hastings are clearly evident as sprawling patches of red along the East Sussex coast. The presence of the South Downs AONB, which is a protected landscape, has ensured highly tranquil areas still remain fairly close to these settlements.
The sprawl of Eastbourne northwards into Polegate and towards Hailsham is clearly visible. Further north, the towns of Crowborough, Uckfield and Heathfield and their surrounding villages creep into the adjacent countryside, reducing the tranquillity score of this area. The impact of the ribbon development along arterial routes throughout East Sussex is also marked, with lines of red and orange dissecting the South Downs and High Weald AONBs.
We will continue to campaign for the protection of the countryside and its tranquillity in all our activities and when commenting on the various strategic and local planning consultations
