Biodiversity

Let’s treasure the valuable wildlife habitats in Sussex and create more spaces for nature.

Biodiversity is the variety of living things and the natural habitats that support them. Sussex is home to a rich diversity of species and habitats from the heathland in Ashdown Forest, to the chalk grassland of the South Downs, to ancient coppiced woodland with bluebells. About 80 protected species live in Sussex, ranging from dormice to bats, plus about 500 species recognised as a priority for conservation. However, less than 16% of Sussex is protected for its wildlife value, so it’s really important that we treasure these sites and seek every opportunity to increase biodiversity in Sussex.
