CPRE Sussex and the Year of food and Farming
Stop Press!
CPRE Sussex is pleased to support the DEFRA 'Year of Food and Farming 2007 - 2008' and hope to visit primary schools in Sussex to help children discover the link between our landscape and the food it produces.
The new school year saw the launch by DEFRA of the “Year of Food and Farming 2007-2008.”
CPRE SUSSEX are pleased to support this initiative and during the campaign we hope to be able to visit local primary schools to provide some enjoyable and informative activities based around some of the main aims of the project.
The Year's key aim is to promote healthy living by giving every school child in the UK direct experience of the countryside. By July 2008 it is hoped that pupils will have had the chance to enjoy hands-on learning opportunities based around three areas: visiting farms, growing food and cooking or preparing food.
Experiencing what the countryside has to offer alongside learning more about environmental issues linked to food and the countryside will help address the current problem of ‘agricultural illiteracy' that exists amongst many of our children. This is reflected in a recent survey of 1000 pupils which revealed that 1:5 have never visited the countryside; only 20% have ever picked and eaten fruit; 17% have only been once or twice and that some did not know that carrots came out of the ground!
We shall update you on our activities during the year and we would welcome any ideas that you may have to use with 5-11 year olds! Additional information on this campaign is available from the website www.yearoffoodandfarming.org.uk
