Night Blight

The map show the South East has the smallest proportion of its total land area in the truly dark category, only 1%. The data also shows the rural areas in Sussex that have seen the greatest change, becoming considerably brighter in recent years. West Sussex has faired better than East where a 15% increase in the "light blue" category has been recorded between 1993 and 2000. This compares with a moderate increase of 6% in the same category for West Sussex.
Across Sussex there are examples of both good and bad lighting schemes. Golf driving ranges are notorious as their horizontal lights can penetrate deep into the surrounding countryside, often miles from the source. This photograph shows poorly directed floodlights causing significant light pollution into the dark night sky.
CPRE commends the Highways Authority's use of full cut-off lanterns. This well-lit roundabout on the outskirts of Ringmer, East Sussex, has minimal light trespass into the night sky or adjacent landscape.
