What can you do?

Preventing light pollution is a matter for everyone in our community. We can all work to ensure we do not cause unnecessary light pollution in and around our homes and places of work by considering the following simple points.

  • Ensure exterior lighting is directed carefully to minimise 'light trespass' into adjacent properties of the countryside.
  • To reduce the effects of glare the main beam angle should be below 70 º
  • Direct lights downwards.
  • Where up-lighting is necessary ensure shields are placed above the lamp to minimise upward light.
  • Switch off lights when not in use.
  • A 150 watt lamp is quite adequate for domestic security lights. Higher wattage lamps create too much glare.
  • A 9 watt lamp will provide adequate lighting for all night security, with out the excessive glare and dark shadows created by bright lights.
  • Press your local planning authority to include lighting in planning guidance.
