The South Downs
A Working Landscape
The Downs are a working landscape, traditionally grazed by cattle and sheep with arable crops grown on the more accessible dip slopes. Small villages are scattered along the lowland edges of the chalk ridge. It is essential these rural communities survive as they are an integral part of the Downland landscape.
