CPRE SUSSEX LAUNCH “STOP THE DROP” LITTER HELP-LINE

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England has launched a major campaign led by their president, the well-known author, Bill Bryson, to target the growing problem of litter in the countryside.

The litter problem is huge, and growing. In the UK , an estimated 25 million tonnes a year are dropped – almost entirely made up of food and drink packaging. This is as heavy as 62,500 jumbo jets. And the amount of litter dropped yearly in the UK has increased by 500%since the 1960s. Statistics about fly-tipping are just as shocking: there were 2.6 million incidents in England in 2006-7 – up 5% on the previous year.

CPRE Sussex has launched an email “litter line” to help local residents and groups fight back. People can get advice on littering and flytipping problems by sending their name and address to the litter line – StoptheDrop@cpresussex.org.uk . Information will include details of the public bodies who should be dealing with littering and flytipping problems and how to approach them.

Stuart Meier, Director of CPRE Sussex said “Unfortunately, litter encourages more litter, and sometimes the most effective thing you can do is get together with others in the community to clear things up, but for bigger problems you have to get in touch with the right public body for help. Our helpline gives more information about these things, so if you want help, please send your name and address to StoptheDrop@cpresussex.org.uk ”.
