The internet now provides extensive resources which can help you understand geographic and topographic aspects of countryside issues.

MAPS
For Ordinance Survey Maps at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 try
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

For example, this link shows one of the so-called "Areas of Search" for an East Sussex Landraise site. at 1:50,000
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=551500&Y=115500&A=Y&Z=120
and at 1:25,000
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=551500&Y=115500&A=Y&Z=115

You can see on an OS map the site near Ringmer of a reservoir proposal which CPRE is defending here:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=545890&Y=114885&A=Y&Z=115

Public Footpaths in West Sussex can be found on the 'imap' site: http://was.westsussex.gov.uk/apps/imap/ Select 'Public Paths' in the drop down box in the top left corner, the zoom into the required part of the map.

Unfortunately, no such facility yet appears to exist in East Sussex. Click on ESCC website for more information.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
See the Ringmer site as a vertical aerial photograph *here*

And as an oblique areaila photograph ( 'Birds-eye view' ) *here*

Here (as links via Tinyurl) are aerial photos of ancient woodland near Bexhill http://tinyurl.com/395937w and as a birds-eye view http://tinyurl.com/2b2cmxj

Here is the birds-eye view of the site CPRE is defending from a reservoir proposal at Ringmer: http://tinyurl.com/34kgjeo

PHOTOGRAPHS
'Streetview' can be a useful tool to assess photos of countryside on or visible from public and some private roads. Here are views of the 'Lions of Wartling' which are causing concern on the Pevensey Levels http://tinyurl.com/388f84m

MAGIC
MAGIC is the Multi-Agency Government Information system for the Countryside. Reach it here: www.magic.gov.uk

This links to the 'Lions of Wartling' on Pevensey levels via MAGIC too: http://tinyurl.com/3yj8wx5

MAGIC's interactive map can be directly accessed here: http://www.magic.gov.uk/website/magic/
Using steps ! and 2, select the topic and location. Once visited, the link can be saved by clicking the 'Generate bookmark' button (top tool bar, second button from right).

A custom set of 'Map topics' can be accessed through the Change Map Topic tab then 'Design my own topic' selection; then click Next, select, then save a set of custom topics (or load saved ones) using the buttons at the top of the window.

For more about MAGIC, visit: http://www.magic.gov.uk/help/ where extensive help is available.

MORE eTOOLS information will appear here shortly. For more advice, if you belong to CPRE Sussex, please contact Stuart Meier on stuartm2007@gmail.com
