Climate Emergency Summit: 5 Oct

Organisations, activists and experts and gathering in Shoreham-by-Sea on Saturday, 5th October for a Climate Emergency Summit. With growing recognition that we are facing a climate emergency, the Summit will explore the issues relating to climate change and what is needed to protect the environment, health and well-being.

Author and broadcaster, Peter Owen-Jones, will start the summit with a passionate plea for collective and individual action, along with a young youth4climate activist. Representatives from the National Climate Change Committee, CPRE Sussex, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Green Alliance and many others will outline what action is already underway. Dr Howie Firth will set out plans to make Orkney fully sustainable and self-sufficient in energy production as an example of what can be achieved at local level.

Local organisations, community groups and decision makers will be invited to discuss and develop sustainability plans which can be achieved at local, regional and national level.

The following day, Sunday 6th October, is a free event just for young people, which is being planned with students from Shoreham Academy and the Brighton group of YouthStrike4Climate. Influenced by the work of Greta Thunberg, who started the school strike movement, the young activists are meeting with scientists from Sussex University and local organisations to hear more about the issues behind climate change and what can be done locally and through collective action.

The Climate Emergency events have been organised through a partnership of CPRE Sussex, The EYE project which works to develop sustainability in schools, Shoreham Wordfest and the Ropetackle Arts Centre.

The Summit and Young People’s event have been supported by Rampion Community Fund.
