Let’s celebrate our countryside heroes

30th May 2026

CPRE Sussex column written for West Sussex Gazette, May 2026.

The fight to protect the countryside can feel like an uphill battle. Climate change, inap-propriate developments and the erosion of local voices are putting our precious green spaces at risk as never before.

But, despite this, lam constantly inspired by those who love the countryside and are working tirelessly to protect it. There is so much happening here in Sussex which shows what can be achieved when we work together to protect, celebrate and regenerate the countryside.

That is why I am delighted that the national CPRE charity has launched its Centenary Awards. The awards aim to celebrate the individuals, businesses and community groups finding practical, inspiring ways to protect and enhance the countryside.

There are two categories for individual entries – Countryside Changemaker and Young Country-side Changemaker. Nominees in this category could be dedicated individuals organising practical events to improve their local green spaces or activists fighting for change.

There are also four categories which recognise projects led by com-munities, charities, conservation groups. councils and developers. They are Best Green Space; Best Ac-cess to the Countryside; Best Roof-top Solar Solution; and Best Housing Solution. The categories cover a whole range of projects- from in-creasing biodiversity, to repairing paths and empowering communities to shape their energy future.

The awards are free to enter. Nominations close on June 24. Winners and highly commended nominees will be invited to attend a presentation at the House of Commons on October 29.

I believe Sussex can, and should, be represented at the national awards as a beacon of what can be achieved for our precious country-side.

More information on all the categories is available at cpre.org.uk/ cpre-national-centenary-awards.

Before the national awards, we are also getting ready for our own celebration here in Sussex. The main programme for the 2026 Tree Festival – an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and value of trees – starts later this month.

This year’s festival once again offers something for everyone with creative workshops, guided walks and lots of free activities for the kids. View the full programme at cpre-sussex.org.uk/tf26. Last year more than 750 people attended the Tree Festival, including more than 200 children who engaged in tree education activities. More than i,000 people also viewed an exhibition of our ‘I love this tree because..: photo competition winners.

None of this would be possible without our amazing network of volunteers. They are the ones who allow us to host events, fight for the countryside and campaign for policy change. But we always need more volunteers to support our work. There are lots of ways to get involved. You can join a district group or action team. You can organise a community litter pick or help at one of our events. The only thing you need is a passion for the countryside.
