About Arun District
Arun district is located on the South Coast within West Sussex. The northern half of the district falls within the South Downs National Park. Arun has two main towns (Bognor Regis and Littlehampton) and the open countryside between these towns is important in landscape terms as a ‘green gap.’ The historic town of Arundel and many smaller villages are surrounded by open countryside. There is a large amount of high quality agricultural land. Outside the National Park, Arun has a wealth of valuable environmental assets including four Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI,) five sites of nature conservation importance (SNCI) and three nature reserves. Pagham Harbour is a Special Protection Area (SPA) due to the presence of rare birds. The river Arun is one of the fastest flowing rivers in the country. Much of the district is at risk from flooding fluvial (river) Tidal (sea) or groundwater. Significant areas of the district are designated Source Protection Zones in order to protect rivers and aquifers from pollution.
