Meet our new Chair – Corinne Stuart

22nd July 2025

Our new Chair, Corinne Stuart, explains why she is so passionate about the countryside and her plans to grow support for CPRE Sussex.

Why do you believe the work of CPRE Sussex matters?

CPRE Sussex stands up for the countryside we all know and love. With so much pressure on our green spaces from development and climate change, it’s more important than ever to protect the fields, woods, and wildlife that make Sussex such a special place to live. The countryside isn’t just scenery – it’s part of who we are, and we owe it to future generations to look after it.

How do you feel about your new role as Chair?

I’m really proud to be stepping into the role of Chair. CPRE Sussex is full of dedicated people who care deeply about protecting our local landscapes. I’m looking forward to working alongside communities, members, supporters and volunteers across the county to make sure our countryside has a strong voice.

What inspired your love of the countryside?

I was born in Sussex and grew up in Kent, with the countryside always just outside the back door. My family farmed near Heathfield for generations, so the rhythms of rural life were part of my childhood. I remember when the air was full of insects and birdsong – and I’ve seen how much of that we’ve lost. That sense of loss is what motivates me to protect what’s left and help bring back what we can.

What do you hope to achieve as Chair?

I want to help more local people get involved in protecting the places they care about. That means growing support for CPRE Sussex across the county and making sure our communities have a voice when it comes to planning and protecting green spaces. Our countryside is something we all share, and I want to see it thrive – for us, our children, and our grandchildren.

Corinne brings over 15 years’ experience working with membership organisations, including the Royal Institution and Countryside Alliance. She’s a natural connector, passionate about engaging people and building lasting support for causes she believes in. She now leads a national professional body, where she’s responsible for its overall direction and financial health.
