CPRE Sussex defends High Weald National Landscape from parking for 700 cars

27th January 2026

The proposed huge car park is near St Hill Manor, Saint Hill Road, East Grinstead and applied for by the Church of Scientology Religious Education College, Inc.

Planning application ref:  DM/25/2223 is for change of use and construction works on fields adjacent to Saint Hill Manor, a grade II listed building. The site is within the High Weald National Landscape, one of the country’s most precious landscapes that has the highest level of protection from inappropriate and large scale development.

The creation of hard surfaced parking for approximately 700 cars and various other ground and construction works involves major, permanent, changes to the currently pastoral nature of the site. It is in conflict with the National Planning Policy Framework, Mid Sussex District Council’s own local plan and East Grinstead’s Neighbourhood Plan  The claim in the application that the development proposal will enhance the natural beauty of the High Weald National Landscape is not credible.
