CPRE Chair urges South Downs Authority to challenge A27 announcement

25th May 2018

On 24 May 2018 CPRE Sussex’s Chair David Johnson attended a rally and spoke at a meeting of the South Downs National Park Authority.

Alongside local people and wildlife groups, David Johnson urged the Authority to uphold its statutory duty to protect the park and challenge Highway England’s announcement of the preferred route for the Arundel bypass as option 5a.

The preferred route destroys irreplaceable habitat and cuts through the South Downs National Park.

We are delighted that following this meeting, Margaret Paren, Chair of the Authority came and shared the news of the decision to launch a Judicial Review to challenge Highways England’s procedures in selecting 5a as the preferred option and not complying with national policy and law

The iconic South Downs National Park is afforded the ‘highest protection’ in terms of landscape and scenic beauty and it is important that this protection is upheld.
