Events enjoyed by members and supporters so far in 2025
We organise lots of walks and visits. Below are events held so far in 2025.
Guided walks with Dr Geoffrey Mead
Geoffrey has been leading walks with us for four years and we have enjoyed his amazing knowledge of the Sussex landscape, his stories about past communities and some notable residents too!
13 April: Walk around Arlington Reservoir
Join our friendly bunch of walkers to explore around Arlington Reservoir which sits in a large meander of the Cuckmere river with abundant bird life all about. The walk takes us through the quiet low-lying landscape of the Weald Clay, through Arlington churchyard and its surrounding farmland. Expect springtime mud!
8 June: Discover a lost settlement at Sweet Hill, Patcham
The landscape of Patcham, the village just north of Brighton, changed dramatically in July 1921 when the Abergavenny estate sold 1,300 acres of downland encircling it. The new landowner advertised land for sale at £10 a quarter acre to create a new community at Sweet Hill. Discover why the settlement was abandoned.
6 July: Enjoy the High Weald landscape
Explore the High Weald in high summer – a medieval landscape of wooded, rolling hills studded with sandstone outcrops, small irregular shaped fields, scattered farmsteads and ancient routeways.
14 September: Discover our Sussex heathland at Ambersham Common
Ambersham Common is part of the West Sussex heathlands, a landscape of pines and bracken, sand and gravel; our walk looked at the various ‘mini landscapes’ within the larger heath and noted the contrasts in the human uses of the area.
