Support the CPRE hedgerow campaign
CPRE’s #40by50 campaign is calling on the government to commit to extending the hedgerow network by 40% by 2050.
Hedgerows are the unsung heroes of the Sussex countryside. They’ve been adding beauty and character to our landscapes for centuries, while providing the food and shelter that sustains our wildlife. They protect the soil, clean the air and absorb carbon emissions.
Nationally, we’ve lost about half of our hedgerows since 1945. Now, as we face up to the climate emergency, we need to reverse that decline – and allow our hedgerows to play their most important role yet.
The independent Climate Change Committee in its 2018 report on Land use: reducing emissions and preparing for climate change recommended extending the hedgerow network by 40% by 2050. This means adding over 4,000 miles of new and restored hedgerows a year in the UK – starting now.
But the government seems to have forgotten our hedgerows.
So it’s time for us to call on the government to commit to extending the hedgerow network by 40% by 2050.
