Gatwick Airport ‘second runway’ inquiry must address climate change

13th February 2024

The Planning Inspectorate’s examination of Gatwick Airport’s ‘second runway’ plans kicks off in earnest on 27 February 2024, with a meeting to discuss which specific issues merit dedicated hearings.

CPRE Sussex is extremely surprised to find that climate change is not among the topics proposed for an issue-specific hearing, given that the plans have the potential to worsen aviation’s significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, and the relevance of this to the planning process.

The Chair of CPRE Sussex, Prof Dan Osborn, has written to the Planning Inspectorate requesting that the critical topic of climate change has its own hearing. See: Gatwick Expansion_Request to Examining Authority for Issue Specific Hearing on Climate Change 6 Feb 2024

CPRE Sussex has been campaigning against Gatwick Airport expansion for some time. See: www.cpresussex.org.uk/what-we-care-about/sustainable-transport/aviation/

We’ll be engaging with the planning examination as it progresses. We’ve already submitted our initial objection. See: www.cpresussex.org.uk/news/cpre-sussex-objects-to-gatwick-expansion/
