Fracking

There may or may not be shale oil beneath the Weald basin in Sussex in commercial quantities.  No-one yet knows.  Either way, there is no public benefit, and much environmental harm, in exploiting it.  CPRE Sussex has opposed oil exploration/exploitation applications in Sussex in all their unconventional fracking and acidising guises.

We have called for tougher regulation of the industry to reflect the incompatibility of onshore fossil fuel exploitation with the drive for cleaner energy, cleaner air, a reduction in the rate of climate change and environmental improvement.

The moratorium on fracking announced by the Government in 2019 does not apply to the activities in Sussex.  Happily though, in large part thanks to the efforts of CPRE, other environmental organisations and concerned citizens, there is currently no oil exploitation going on in Sussex using hazardous unconventional extraction processes.
